Actually, a negative image created by protecting clean copper from oxidation to varying degrees while allowing and exposing the remaining copper to the elements which allow for patina / verdigris to form.
All color is created by natural chemical oxidation! NO COLOR, PAINT, or STAIN of any kind used at all!
One of the coolest effects of color from verdigrisis that from different angles and different lighting- can dramaticallychange the visible color and reflectivity of the piece. Its almost like the art is alive!
Be aware of waves or wrinkles - with temperature changes - they come and go, some can stay. They are metal after all...
This fourth version is smaller than the previous three. For this piece, I used 36 gauged (5mil) copper sheet mounted on a backer. The copper is99.9% pure copper. It was sanded aggressivelyand cleaned extremely well. The image is created by protecting the surface with a concoction I call "InvisiblePaint".
Not much working time is allowed- before natural exposure starts the oxidizing process, so there is no room for error or do-over- and NO erasing... Rather quickly, I expose the remaining surface to a variety of, and mixes of natural chemicals in liquid form or fumes- sometimes adding a little heat or direct sun. And also--- Time - lots of time!
Some of the chemicals used are; Salt, Salt water, Phosphates, Ammonia from urea, Sulphur, baking soda, Tea. Nothing dangerous...
Once exposed, with a little time, the patina and verdigris color develops, hopefully where I wanted it and in the expected color... When it gets just right- I clean it and seal it off with a coat of Glaze. The glaze cuts of air and seals the color in, and for the most part, stops the oxidation. Over a long period of time the colors can change, darken or lighten.
This is a rather large piece - total size is 18"x25" (x3/4 thick)" The copper sheet is wrapped over backer. It weighs several pounds, so care should be exercisedwith how you hang or display it.
If you purchase- I hope it makes a great addition to your collection and generates great conversation!
